I’m it!! I was tagged by Christy English, talented writer and lovely person, in the blog game– THE NEXT BIG THING. In this game, authors talk about their Work In Progress and tag other talented writers to share theirs. FUN!
Let’s rock this.
What is the working title of your book?
BECOMING JOSEPHINE
Where did the idea for the book come from?
I had just decided to pursue my dream of writing fiction and literally, the next day, I could hear Josephine’s voice in my head. I read everything I could get my hands on about her after that.
What genre does your book fall under?
Historical Fiction, technically, but it has an Upmarket Women’s Fiction feel to it. Add a dash of romance and voila!
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Guillaume Canet would HAVE to be Napoleon. And possibly Audrey Tautou for Josephine, but the jury is still out on that one.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Abandoned in Revolutionary Paris after her husband betrays her, a young Creole woman survives imprisonment and charms her way into high society to become Josephine, Napoleon’s Empress.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
My novel and forthcoming novels are represented by Michelle Brower of Folio Literary Management.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
A year and a half. This is my first novel so I had a HUGE learning curve, not to mention baby number two.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
It’s difficult to compare myself to such talented writers, but I’d say my book is a marriage of THE PARIS WIFE and MADAME TUSSAUD. My heroine is sweet and naive and suffers greatly at the hand of her husbands’ follies. But she’s also incredibly brave and cunning and above all, a survivor.
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
I finally decided to pursue my dream, as I mentioned above, and the rest was all the muse.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
Gorgeous gowns, sensual descriptions, the search for love and meaning during an incredibly volatile time period. I’ll throw the blurb in here:
Rose sails from Martinique to Paris to trade her plantation ways and Creole black magic culture for love and adventure. But her haughty Parisian husband dashes her hopes when he abandons her amid the tumult of the French Revolution. Through her savoir faire, Rose secures her footing in high society, reveling in handsome men and glitzy balls—until the heads of her friends begin to roll. After narrowly escaping death in the blood-drenched cells of Les Carmes prison, she reinvents herself as Josephine, a socialite of status and power. Yet her youth is fading, and Josephine must choose between a precarious independence and the unwelcome love of an awkward suitor. Little does she know, he would become the most powerful man of his century- Napoleon Bonaparte.

Heather, I love the sound of your book! I can’t wait to read it! Josephine has always been one of my favorite women… Thank you for letting me tag you. 🙂
I don’t feel so devastated with the time it’s taken to write my WIP now that I know it took you 18 months to write yours. 🙂
HAHA! Evangeline, that was ONLY the first draft! There were many after that. I’m amazed by the speed with which you crank out novels!
No wonder this got snapped up by an agent! I’m already totally intrigued by the description. Can’t wait till it comes out and I can read it!!
Awww, thanks, Erin. <3
